General information[]
The Acheron (ˈækərən; Ἀχέρων, Acheron or Ἀχερούσιος Acherousios; Αχέροντας Acherontas) is a river WP located in the Epirus WP region of northwest Greece. It is 52 km (32 mi) long, and its drainage area is 705 km2 (272 sq mi). Its source is near the village Zotiko WP, in the southwestern part of the Ioannina regional unit WP and it flows into the Ionian Sea WP in Ammoudia WP, near Parga WP.
Mythology[]
In ancient Greek mythology WP, Acheron was known as the "river of woe", and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld WP. In the Homeric WP poems, the Acheron was described as a river of Hades, into which Cocytus WP and Phlegethon WP both flowed.
The Roman poet Virgil WP called it the principal river of Tartarus WP, from which the Styx WP and Cocytus WP both sprang. The newly dead would be ferried across the Acheron by Charon in order to enter the Underworld. The Suda WP describes the river as "a place of healing, not a place of punishment, cleansing and purging the sins of humans".
According to later traditions, Acheron had been a son of Helios WP and either Gaia or Demeter, who had been turned into the Underworld river bearing his name after he refreshed the Titans WP with drink during their contest with Zeus WP. By this myth, Acheron is also the father of Ascalaphus WP by either Orphne WP or Gorgyra WP.
The word is also occasionally used as a synecdoche WP for Hades itself.

Potamoi[]
The river gods were the 3,000 sons of the great earth-encircling river Oceanus WP and his wife Tethys WP and the brothers of the Oceanids WP. They were also the fathers of the Naiads WP. The river gods were depicted in one of three forms: a man-headed bull, a bull-headed man with the body of a serpent-like fish from the waist down, or as a reclining man with an arm resting upon an amphora WP jug pouring water.
