General information[]
Hades (Háidēs) was the ancient Greek WP chthonic WP god WP of the underworld WP, which eventually took his name.
In Greek mythology WP, Hades was regarded as the oldest son of Cronus WP and Rhea WP, although the last regurgitated by his father WP. He and his brothers Zeus WP and Poseidon WP defeated their father's generation of gods, the Titans WP, and claimed rulership over the cosmos WP. Hades received the underworld, Zeus the air, and Poseidon the sea, with the solid earth—long the province of Gaia WP—available to all three concurrently. Hades was often portrayed with his three-headed WPguard dog Cerberus WP and, in later mythological authors, associated with the Helm of Darkness WP and the bident WP.
The Etruscan WP god Aita WP and Roman WP gods Dis Pater WP and Orcus WP were eventually taken as equivalent WP to the Greek Hades and merged as Pluto, a latinization WP of his euphemistic Greek name Plouton.
