General information[]

In Greek mythology ^WP, Calliope (/kəˈlaɪ.əpi/ kə-LY-ə-pee; Ancient Greek ^WP: Καλλιόπη, romanized ^WP: Kalliópē, lit ^WP. 'beautiful-voiced') is the Muse ^WP who presides over eloquence ^WP and epic poetry ^WP;   so called from the ecstatic ^WP harmony ^WP of her voice.   Hesiod ^WP and Ovid ^WP called her the "Chief of all Muses".

Mythology[]

Calliope had two famous sons, Orpheus and Linus ^WP, by either Apollo or King Oeagrus ^WP of Thrace ^WP.   She taught Orpheus verses for singing.   According to Hesiod, she was also the wisest of the Muses, as well as the most assertive.   Calliope married Oeagrus in Pimpleia ^WP, a town near Mount Olympus ^WP.
