Forums: Index > Help desk > Why is my net gold drastically lower than my income?

I'm still rather new to the whole game so please excuse this newbie question, but this is confusing me. I don't have any colonies, not pillaging anyone, and it seems like I can't assign as many workers to anything as I once could when I was a few levels lower. It says my income is a rather high number, but when I go to the town hall, the net gold is in the negatives. I think it started after I got Improved Resource Gathering. I thought it was supposed to, well, improve everything. Am I missing something? -- The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs)

Your net gold is your income minus the cost of Scientists assigned to the Academy and the upkeep of any military units or ships you may have. So, if you want to increase you net gold, either increase your income by increasing the number of free citizens (not assigned to the Saw mill or the Luxury resource), or fire some of your Scientists, Units or Ships to decrease upkeep costs.
